Big Apple Solar Installation Commitment (BASIC) accelerates the adoption and usage of Solar Energy in New York City
through education and community outreach. As the NYC Partner of the US Department of Energy’s
Million Solar Roofs Initiative , BASIC has a
commitment to stimulate the installation of at least 1,000 new solar energy systems in NYC by 2010.
Based on current trends, however, the organization expects to far exceed that number.
BASIC activities include:
- Serving as a hub of solar and renewable energy information in NYC, and a resource for residents, building owners, educators and building professionals such as architects, engineers, and designers.
- Organizing solar energy education events for building owners, community organizations, corporations, and members of the building community.
- Developing and disseminating educational materials such as websites, newsletters, financing guides and fact sheets.
- Working with banks and building owners to obtain low interest solar energy system financing.
- Consulting on solar energy projects for schools and non-profit institutions.
- Partnering with like-minded organizations to develop broader environmental and energy education events with a solar energy component.
BASIC was founded in 2003 and is dependent on grants, donations, sponsorships and the efforts of volunteers for survival.
